I’m not so sure if companies like Rogers record phone conversations as they say they do.

For the last month I’ve been in conversations with Rogers Cell Network. They promised me something that now they have no intention of doing.

Rogers has been my cellphone company for 15 years, since they first started selling iPhones. Needless to say, I have history with them. 

Over the years I’ve never really had a reason to question whether to stay with them or go to another carrier. 

… Well, that is until now. 

I received a phone call from them in early September saying that I could upgrade my plan to a forever plan. It would cost me an extra $10 per month and it came with 50 gigs of data. 

I wasn’t that interested in the idea of paying more money and I certainly didn’t need 50 gigs of data. But I knew my wife Lily would need a plan in a month and maybe we could share the data.

I suggested that idea to the salesperson on the phone. She said that, yes, that could happen and the price she quoted me to add Lily was very reasonable. I just needed to call back at the end of the month when Lily was ready to bring her phone over. 

… Well, that didn’t happen.  

Even though every time I called Rogers they said each conversation was being recorded for training, safety and to verify my voice, the recordings were not used.  

Over the next month I phoned Rogers four times and each time I was told that I would receive a call within 24 to 48 hours to set the deal in motion. 

… It never happened; I never got a call.

Finally, on my last call, the person said there was no such rate as I was quoted and that the salesperson had not made notes of that offer to me.

I responded with, “Just listen to the recording.” But each person I spoke with said they had no access to the recordings. 

I thought that was rather convenient: tell someone something, don’t make a note about it and it’s like it never happened.

Rogers believed the salesperson’s notes, but not the verbal offer I described was made to me. 

Easy solution: just listen to the recording! If the offer was not on the recording, they could just say no. But if the recording revealed that an offer was made, then make good on the offer. After that, use the recording for training purposes so the salesperson doesn’t do that again. 

But Rogers just said they don’t have access to the recordings. 

I wonder if they really make recordings or just say they do. 

The crazy thing is, why would I agree to increase my monthly payment by $10 to get an absurd amount of data, when I only use a fraction of my present data? The only logical reason is that they offered me something that I could benefit from. 

My days with Rogers may be numbered. I don’t need the plan I have.

Maybe WE should start recording phone conversations with these companies!

Here’s the thing: God offers us a simple plan for life and eternity. We can have our sins forgiven, start a relationship with Him and spend eternity in heaven. Our part is to put our faith in Jesus Christ in a way that shows it’s true faith. We don’t have to wonder if God will make good on His promise. John 5:24 tells us that God will fulfill His part of the offer. Look it up and take God up on His plan.

I feel that taking a break from all media sources might help calm my mind and my emotions.

In order for me to do that, I need to turn off the radio in my car, my television set at home, and all social media feeds on my computer, tablet and cell phone. 

That would be extreme living for me … and all in a bad way.

I’ve heard of people living off the grid, moving to some remote place where they have to hike in on foot, and setting up a yurt after they cut down a bunch of trees in the middle of a pine forest. 

They live on vegetables that they grow and fish that they catch. Every month or so they treat themselves to a trip to a city to really experience life.

You know I’m just kidding. 

For all my off-the-grid readers, how do you even get this blog? 

At least the off-the-gridders can be selective with the media they are exposed to. In the last couple of days I’ve been so frustrated with what I’ve heard in the media that I’m ready do something, but don’t what to do or whom to do it to. 

All the impeachment talk concerning President Trump has me itching to impeach the media …Could someone actually do that?

I’m not saying for one moment that Trump didn’t do something wrong, but let’s not jump to the conclusion before we have the whole story.

The conclusion is where everyone is. Even the NDP candidate running for the PM of Canada is calling for Donald Trump to be impeached. 

It’s all emotion based on information provided from someone we don’t know … information that still has yet to be verified as all true and accurate.

For all I know, what we are being told is true, but most likely it’s partially true or mostly true. 

Remember the prince in the Princess Bride who was only mostly dead? I think what we are being fed fits somewhere in that category of not being completely true or false, just mostly one or the other. 

But the media is talking about it as if it has all been proven true. They even interpret some of Trump’s words from the phone recording in ways that exaggerate what was said. 

It stirs people’s emotions and builds a hype that creates a unified voice that judges and condemns before any real investigation or trial has done its job. 

What the media is doing is building strong support for something that is based mostly on opinion at this point … their opinion! 

And when that opinion catches wind, they stir the embers and fan their opinion flame into a bonfire, maybe even a wild fire that can’t be stopped. 

Opinion is not truth. It might be true, but it’s not true until it is proven. When opinion becomes truth before it is proven, that’s what you call North American news. 

They hold up their right to inform the people, but they are really only forming the people to their opinion. 

Here’s the thing: Some people’s belief systems are based on opinion. Their opinion of God seems to be truth to them, even though they have never taken the time to prove their opinion one way or the other. All of us should question how we have let our opinion of God rule our relationship with Him, rather than seeking proof of God in our relationship with Him.

Make Good On Your Promise

I just got a new credit card for the precise purpose of collecting reward points. This will eventually enable me to purchase a new cell phone on points.

The reason the credit card company was trying to communicate how terribly sorry they were is because they declined my card on my third purchase … MY THIRD PURCHASE!

My card is through Rogers Bank, and why wouldn’t they have a bank? They own television stations, a cable company, an internet service, and a cell phone provider. They need a bank.

My first purchase on the card was for $24 at Swiss Chalet for a meal with my wife and son. With my initial purchase I got 5,000 points, and that’s $50 towards a new phone.

Two days later, I followed that purchase up with one for about $100 to my auto mechanic. That’s the first time I’ve actually been slightly disappointed that my repair bill was so low.

I had anticipated a bill of around $300-$500 and in my head I was thinking cha-ching – rewards points, come to papa!

You can imagine my dismay now that my bill will be getting me less than half the points I had pre-calculated.

The very next day we had scheduled a hot water tank replacement. I specifically told Lily we would be using my new card since the purchase would be around $1000 and I would pocket about two thousand points for the purchase.

That’s when Rogers Bank ran out of money. I just started with the guys, but they weren’t expecting me to purchase something over $500, I guess.

I have a limit of $10,000 on the card – you’d think they would allow me to put that much on it … I only wanted a thousand.

Their reason for declining my card was that it was out of my regular pattern.

I replied to the guy on the phone, “Out of my regular pattern?! How can I have a pattern?! I just got the card four days ago and this is my third purchase!”

Of course, he was very sorry for the inconvenience, “and the embarrassment” I added.

I’m not sure Rogers Bank is going to make it. The guy I talked to couldn’t give me rewards points for my lost points on the declined purchase. His supervisor also didn’t have the authority to give me those rewards points.

These Rogers rewards points must really be worth a lot or they are running this bank on a shoestring.

It’s been four days since my decline, eight days since I’ve had my card. I haven’t seen any reward points yet – not the bonus points I was promised and no word from the president of Rogers as to whether they will break their piggy bank and give me some “sorry” points. I’m waiting . . . patiently.

Heres the thing: Have you promised God that you’d give Him your life? But you’ve actually kept control of some or a good portion of it for yourself? All that does is cause Him to question your sincerity. Make good on your promises and let Him lead. Don’t frustrate God’s plan by holding back and not giving Him everything you promised.
